Weight Loss Success Tips

Author: Ruth Crosier

When it comes to weight loss efforts:

Do you define success based on what the scale says?
Do you perform traditional gym routines using machines?
Do you obsess about the calories you consume?

If you answered YES to ANY of the above questions, despite good intentions, you could be undermining your weight loss success!

Here are the Top 8 Do's & Don'ts for successful Weight Loss:

  1. DON'T TRUST THE SCALE...DO MEASURE PROGRESS BY HOW YOUR CLOTHES FIT! The scale is NOT the best indicator of FAT loss! Lean muscle is smaller and weighs more than fat. By losing fat and toning up, you become smaller in size (as evidenced by how your clothes fit). However, the scale may stay the same or even increase!
  2. DON'T SKIP MEALS...DO EAT 3 MEALS & 2 SNACKS EVERYDAY! Skipping meals eliminates calories in the short run, but sets you up for failure in the long run! You're more likely to overeat at your next meal and more importantly your body reverts to basic primal instincts. Your body can't differentiate between intentional lack of calories and scarcity of food! In fact, Sumo wrestlers who strive to be big and fat eat only twice a day because it slows metabolism and increases levels of fat storing hormones. To keep your metabolism in high gear, feed your body throughout the day!
  3. DON'T WASTE TIME AT THE GYM...DO MULTI-TASK! Traditional gym routines are very time consuming with a limited focus on specific muscle groups without the benefit of simultaneous cardio and core training. It's very wise to Multi Task with HYBRID exercises. Hybrid exercise combines Weight Resistance, Core Exercise and Cardio in one movement so you do 3x the exercise in 1/3 the time!
  4. DON'T WORK...DO FUN! Traditional gym workouts by design are hard and meant to feel like work. By choosing FUN workouts you increase the likelihood of making these lifestyle changes permanent.
  5. DON'T BE QUIET...DO MAKE NOISE (LOTS OF IT)! Tell people and recruit others to join you in setting personal goals for improved health! By verbalizing goals you hold yourself more accountable for your actions. It also allows others to celebrate your progress and encourage you along the way!
  6. DON'T MEMORIZE...DO CONFUSE! Your same old routine may be memorized, but it doesn't maximize your efforts. Choose workout that continually challenge your body in many different ways, so you see continued results day after day.
  7. DON'T SLOUCH...DO MAINTAIN GOOD POSTURE! Bad posture burns fewer calories than good posture! Good posture requires more muscles to be activated, which in turn burns more calories! Added benefit, you look 10 pounds lighter when you stand up straight!
  8. DON'T DIET...DO BURN CALORIES! There's more to weight loss than just calories consumed! It's a simple mathematical fact that the only way to achieve weight loss is by burning more calories than you consume, HOWEVER, not all calories are created equal! Healthy fats (like those found in salmon) actually help your body get rid of bad fats! It's more empowering to focus on increasing your metabolism to burn more calories rather than focusing on constricting the number of calories consumed! Hybrid exercises take your heart rate up and down in a short period of time (interval training) providing an "after-burn" effect so you continue to burn additional calories several hours after you complete your workout!

“SICK DAY” MEDICATION ADVICE:

Author: Dr. Andrew Steele, MD, FRCP(C)

Dear Patient: If you become acutely ill, especially if you have diarrhea or vomiting, the following types of medication should be held until you are better. These drugs are good at protecting the kidney and the heart as well as for blood pressure control, but paradoxically they can be harmful if you are dehydrated.

New article: European Society for Hypertension

Author: Dr. Murray Awde

I attended the meeting of European Society for Hypertension in Oslo Norway, during June 18 - 21, 2010.

I note this year there were no new blockbuster drugs released at the time of the meeting nor were there any major clinical trials released for review.

There was lots of practical information related to obesity, salt intake and exercise in the management and treatment of hypertension as well as several excellent lectures on different aspects of hypertension and newer combinations of medications such as Coversyl with amlodipine (Coveram) and Nifedipine and Telmisartan.

A Comparative Evaluation of Various Methods for Microalbuminuria Screening

Author: Dr. George L. Bakris

Dr. Bakris and I met at a recent ASN meeting and discussed a tool that can be used in primary care screening for nephropathy. Subsequent to that, Dr. Bakris wrote the paper below with the screening device utilized in the trial.

Whiplash

The term whiplash refers to an injury to your neck which is caused by the head being thrown forward (flexion), then backward (extension). (See picture below)

Other terms for whiplash can be neck sprain or strain, and it is an injury to the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons) of the neck. It most often occurs as a result of rear-end car collision, but can also happen during a fall, or from an injury while playing sports. Severe whiplash can also involve injury to the joints, discs, neck muscles and nerves. Symptoms may start right after the injury or may take several days to become noticeable.

H1N1 Patient Information

Patients who suspect they have the flu should NOT rush to the doctors office.

Sleep & Your Health

Good sleep is vital for healthy living. In fact, it is as important as good nutrition and physical fitness. For those with untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) work and relationships may also be affected. Untreated OSAS is associated with an increased risk of co-morbid associations such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and development of Type 2 Diabetes. OSAS is highly under-diagnosed. Symptoms are often treated while the underlying cause is undetermined.

2008 Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines

Diabetes is a serious condition with potentially devastating complications that affects all age groups (1). In Canada, it is estimated that 1.4 million Canadians had diabetes in the year 2000; a projected increase to 2.4 million is expected by the year 2016.

What's New in Type II diabetes?

At the EASD in Vienna 2009, newer classes of drugs for type II diabetes were discussed. Some have been released in Europe while others are still awaiting release in North America.
Three distinct classes of drugs are available. The class released in Canada to date are the oral agents called DPP-4 inhibitors (gliptins). There will be 4 available by Merck, AZ/BMS, Novartis and BI.
These drugs compete in the gut for binding sites much like ACEI do for hypertension blocking glucose absorption. They offer advantage of being orally administered, single dosing, weight control or reduction and side effect profile similar to placebo.
The next class of drugs are called GLP-1 mimetics, these are glucagon like compounds given once or twice.
