European Association for the Study of Diabetes

No significant clinical trials on Diabetes released at the meeting. Many clinical trials in progress. New classes of drugs are available. Commonly DPP4 inhibitors, Januvia, Onglyza, Galvus and others to follow. Oral agents with no morbility and mortality data to date.
There will be six available as early as 2013 in North America. All have same mode of action in the gut, but differ with dosing, price and side effects. Newer ones will have no renal issues at lower EGFR’s but generally those patients will be older and probably in the public reimbursement sector.

European Society of Cardiology

Most significant trial to be released was the ARISTOLE trial, concurrently published in N.E.J.M. Apixaban from BMS is a factor X inhibitor.

Cardiovascular disease

Recently I attended the European Society of Hypertension meeting June 17-20 in Milan, Italy. This area tends to be a major source of clinical trials in HTN and cardiovascular disease.
